Carefully Analyze Safeguard Benefits & Tradeoffs

False assumptions can be a dangerous affair.
"Many participants in our classes just assume that an OEM provides a machine with the needed safeguards," says Chris Soranno, machine and process safety engineer at Omron STI. "But in North America, an equipment buyer must add the needed safeguarding devices to provide what the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) calls a safe work environment."

| Elements of a Machine Guarding Program |

What elements should be included in an excellent machine guarding program?
According to John Czerniak, senior safety consultant at the National Safety Council, one needs to ensure all employees understand machine guarding basics, develop an area-specific list of machine guards and guarding methods, define roles and responsibilities for ensuring guards are in place, and develop a machine guarding audit program.

| A Simplified Muting Solution |
|
Do you "mute"? Muting is a temporary bypassing of the protective function of a light curtain that, when used properly, can help accelerate industrial processes while protecting personnel from potentially hazardous situations.
F3SJ safety light curtains from Omron STI are an ideal muting solution in OEM or retrofit applications. Where many safety light curtains require a dedicated "muting controller" to benefit from muting functions, this functionality is integral to the F3SJ and can be used by simply replacing the unit's cap with an optional muting key cap.
Now available from Omron STI are two new devices that make a good solution even better. The F39-TC5 connector terminal box enables the F3SJ safety light curtain and muting sensors to be easily connected with collective wiring, and the F3SP-T01 safety terminal relay helps clean up messy wiring inside the panel while significantly simplifying connections to prevent incorrect wiring.
