Due to space requirements, this Strippit Turret Press required several
types of guarding. There were four machines side-by-side that required
the operators to use two-wheeled carts; one to bring material in, and one to remove it once the
operation was complete. In order to accomplish this Omron STI installed three different
zones of mats.
Zone "1", the operator side of the machine, was a combination of mats that provided 48
inches of safe distance from front to back to protect the operator from moving material. Zone
"2", the aisle in front of the machine, required a combination of mats and barrier guards to
allow necessary access for maintenance. Minimizing the amount of space required, and
keeping the point of operation completely safe were additional requirements. Zone "3" was
the most challenging aspect. This side of the machine demanded constant access by the
operator to be able to safety maneuver in and around the area to retrieve and install new
scrap trays. In addition, a machine in close proximity required the operator to move carts in
and out of the area. Barrier guards were installed to protect both machine operators; one from
moving carts of materials and the other from material being fabricated on the machine. Mats
were installed providing the operator a 36-inch area to safety penetrate this zone as required.
The operator could not see the opposite side of the machine while at the operator's station.
This raised concern that someone might enter the area for maintenance reasons and be in or
under the machine. To alleviate this concern, the MC-4 mat controller was interfaced to
operate in the guard mode, requiring the operator to physically walk to the "blind" side of the
machine to see if it is safe and press the Zone "3" mat reset button. |
